When I’m not doing video or editing work, I also write and record original music. In 2019, I was selected to write and record a song in 3 days at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, England - one of the most innovative studios in the world. I am especially interested in exploring the use of experimental sounds and techniques within an otherwise accessible and heartfelt songwriting format. In 2014, I won a cover contest held by indie rock band The National for my cover of their song "I Need My Girl," using household objects as instruments. The following year, I created my first album, “Pots & Pans” which consisted entirely of found-sounds, everyday objects, and vocals. It was called "without question, the most ambitious record of 2015" by the Frederick News Post. I’m always looking for new and interesting sounds and instruments. start to end (2019)
My second self-produced album “Start To End” continues my exploration of found-sounds while contrasting with more traditional instruments like guitar, piano, drums, and bass. I wanted to focus in particular on acoustic sounds and instruments that can be recorded without amplification - such as wine glasses, flute, upright bass, grand piano. My goal was to record everything with a mic to create a sense of space. I also tried to avoid using digital effects, and instead experimented with using contact mics and unconventional mic placement to create natural acoustic effects like distortion and reverb.
Raining in my head (2019)
In 2019, I was selected to participate in a 3 day recording session at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, England along with 20 other musicians from around the world. The idea of the project was for each of us to work in pairs to write and record a song from scratch. It was an incredible experience at one of the most innovative studios in the world, and I learned a lot about recording. This is the song that I created, providing vocals, flute, and piano. I also made the “drum machine” pattern, which is actually created from percussive saxophone noises that I recorded.
pots & pans (november 2015)
